WE decided to celebrate our first night on holiday with a bottle of local wine – until we heard it was £58. Welcome to Capri.

No wonder this beautiful Italian island is a favourite with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Naomi Campbell, Roman Abramovich, Richard Gere and Sly Stallone. You need a celebrity bank balance to stay there.

But don’t get me wrong. Capri is a must-see place, just not the place to stay. Instead, book yourself into the neighbouring island of Ischia then take a day trip to Capri, just one hour by hydrofoil across the Bay of Naples.
